Which trim do you need?

Every window fit leaves gaps - inside against the plaster, outside against the brickwork, and along the edge of the window board. Each trim below is made for a particular kind of gap. If you’re not sure which one you need, measure the gap and pick the trim that covers it with a few millimetres to spare.

Architrave

Architrave is the flat trim with a rounded pencil edge that most people picture when they say “window trim”. It covers the joint where the frame meets the plaster inside, and it’s just as handy for door linings, boxing in and tidying the edge of a reveal. Choose the 45mm architrave for a neat replacement fit, the 65mm architrave for a rougher opening, or the 95mm architrave when you need to hide the plaster damage that often comes with taking out old frames.

Cloaking fillet

Cloaking fillet is a flat trim used outside, covering the gap between the window frame and the brickwork or render. It’s also a good finish along the edge of a window board. The 20mm cloaking fillet suits a tight fit, and the 30mm cloaking fillet gives you more cover where the gap is uneven.

Quadrant

Quadrant is a quarter-round profile for internal corners, such as where a window board meets the frame, where a frame meets a tiled reveal, or along the foot of a door frame. The 13mm quadrant is the everyday size. Step up to the 17.5mm quadrant for a bigger gap or a more solid-looking finish.

D mould

The 25mm D moulding is a half-round profile with a flat back. It’s the tidy way to cover a straight joint, finish a panel edge or hide a cable run, and it gives a softer line than a flat trim.

Chamfered bead

The 20mm chamfered bead is a small square trim with an angled face. It gives a crisp, modern line in an internal corner, so it’s the one to choose over quadrant when you want a sharper look round a frame or along a window board.

Angle trims

Angle trims cover external corners, most often the outside edge of a plastered reveal, where they protect the plaster from knocks and give a straight, clean line. Rigid angle comes in 25mm, 60mm and 80mm. For wide reveals, the 100 x 80mm hollow angle is a chunkier, multi-chambered profile that stays straight over long runs and covers a lot of rough edge in one go.

Where a corner isn’t square, such as a bay window, use adjustable angle. It’s a flat strip with a flexible hinge down the middle, so it folds to whatever angle you need. The 50mm adjustable angle folds to 25mm x 25mm, the 70mm adjustable angle to 35mm x 35mm, and the 100mm adjustable angle to 50mm x 50mm.

Colours

White is the everyday choice, and it’s available in every trim on this page. To match coloured windows, most profiles also come in woodgrain finishes - Rosewood, Golden Oak, Irish Oak, Black Ash, Anthracite Grey, Agate Grey, Chartwell Green and White Ash - and in smooth finishes to go with aluminium-look and modern frames, including Anthracite Grey Smooth, Matt Black, Cream White, Moondust Grey and Slate Grey. Not every trim is made in every colour, so the colours you can pick on each product are the ones available for that profile.

How much to order

Measure each opening you’re trimming - up one side, across the top, down the other side and along the bottom if you need it. Add all the runs together and divide by 5 to get the number of 5m lengths, rounding up. On anything bigger than a single window, add one spare length, because every mitred corner uses a bit extra. On smaller windows you can often get two sides out of one length, so it’s worth planning your cuts before you order.

Fitting window trims

Cut the trims with a fine-toothed saw or a mitre saw, and mitre the corners at 45 degrees for a clean, professional finish. Fix them with a trim adhesive or a low-modulus silicone. Silirub LMN works well and comes in colours to suit white, woodgrain and grey trims. On an uneven wall, tap in a few small panel pins to hold the trim while the adhesive sets, then run a thin bead of matching silicone along any joints to finish.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between architrave and cloaking fillet?

Both cover gaps around a window. Architrave is usually fitted inside, against the plaster. Cloaking fillet is usually fitted outside, against brickwork or render, or along the edge of a window board. They’re similar flat profiles with a rounded edge, so on many jobs either will work. Pick the one whose width covers your gap.

Can I use uPVC window trims inside and outside?

Yes. Every trim on this page is made from exterior-grade uPVC, so it won’t rot, swell or fade in normal use, and it’s just as good fitted inside the house.

Do I need to paint uPVC trims?

No. The colour runs right through white trims, and coloured trims have a foil finish bonded on in the factory. Neither needs painting, and both clean up with a damp cloth.No. The colour runs right through white trims, and coloured trims have a foil finish bonded on in the factory.
