What is the difference between flat soffit and hollow soffit?

Flat soffit is a thinner board that needs backing timber or a short span behind it. Hollow soffit has internal ribs and spans a wider open gap between the fascia and the wall without support. If you are capping over sound existing timber, flat will do; if the eaves are open, use hollow.

How do I work out the width I need?

Measure from the back of the fascia board to the wall. Add a little for the board to sit into the wall trim, then take the next size up. Most houses land on 150mm or 200mm; deep overhangs and boxed detail take 300mm or 400mm.

Can I use flat soffit where the roof needs ventilation?

Not on its own. Plain flat soffit has no air path, so pair it with a vented soffit board along the eaves, or fit over-fascia vents above the board.
