Do I need backing timber behind hollow soffit?

Is 300mm wide enough for my overhang?

It covers most standard house overhangs. Measure from the back of the fascia to the wall — if you are over 300mm you are into boxed soffit territory and want a wider flat board or two runs.

Does hollow soffit ventilate the roof?

Not on its own. Pair it with a vented soffit board along the eaves or fit over-fascia vents above the fascia.
