The ridge cap is what finishes the job. It sits over the ridge tile where the two verge runs meet at the apex, closing off the open end that would otherwise let in wind, rain and birds — the gap that mortar used to fill and then crack out of a few winters later.
 
Two shapes, and the one you need is decided by your ridge tile, not by preference. Half round suits a half round ridge tile, the rounded profile you'll see on most modern estate housing. Angled suits an angled or third-round ridge tile, more common on older properties. Hold one up against the ridge before you order if you're not certain — they aren't interchangeable, and a cap that doesn't match the tile profile leaves a gap.
Fitting takes a minute. Once the verge units are run up to the apex, the cap goes over the ridge tile and the top verge unit, pushed down for a snug fit, then mechanically fixed into the ridge batten or top tile batten with a colour-matched Euronail. No mortar, nothing to repoint, and nothing that'll wash out.
 
You'll need one cap per gable apex — so a standard gable roof with two ends takes two.
