Every run of dry verge needs finishing at both ends, and this one part does both. The starter cap fixes to the batten over the first eaves tile, and the first verge unit slides down over it to lock the bottom of the run in place. The end cap blanks off the verge fixing area on the last unit before the apex, so you are not left looking at an open fixing hole at the top of the roof.
It is the part people forget to order, and it is the one that decides whether the finished verge looks like a proper job or an unfinished one. You need one per verge run, so two for a gable end and four for a standard house with a gable at each end.
Fitting is quick. Sit the starter cap over the first eaves tile, mark the position, take the assembled unit off and fix the starter in the marked position with a screw or nail. Then work the verge units up the rake from there. No mortar, no adhesive, nothing to come loose later.

Verge units to run up the rake, and a ridge cap at the apex where the two runs meet — angled or half round to match your ridge tile. The end cap tidies the last verge unit; the ridge cap is what actually closes off the apex.
